Five Tools You Need To Start Designing Clothes

Clothes design is a complex, intricate but thoroughly rewarding endeavour, and seeing a design take shape from initial sketch to final design.

Whilst there are many different tools you can use and may need for certain specific materials or uses, here are the five implements you need before you can start designing.

Scissors

Two good pairs of scissors are a requirement to cut your different materials, and they need to be good enough to last a long time, comfortable in your hands and sharp enough to make accurate cuts. 

Typically you will need a smaller pair for paper and cardboard, and a larger pair to cut fabrics and textiles. Make sure you oil them, sharpen them and keep them separate and safe.

Measuring Tools

Generally, you will need three main measuring tools to design clothes to a set specification.

You need a tape measure for measuring the body and placing your seams and design lines, a set square for making exact lines and corners, as well as a grading ruler which allows for precise darts and shoulder lines.

Pins And Needles

Whilst many designers have a preference for different needles, pearl head pins are exceptionally easy to work with on a dummy, as you can easily see them, easily grab them and easily place them exactly where you want.

A Sewing Machine

The most important and expensive part of a designer’s repertoire, getting a good sewing machine with an overlocker and the ability to do a zig-zag motion is vital, as cheaper models can very easily wear out.

Mannequin

Designer dummies are incredibly important, as these dress forms are what will give your outfit shape and allow you to build the outfit you want based on natural body shaps and proportions.
